{"id":1760,"date":"2026-09-20T19:43:34","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T19:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/?post_type=resources&#038;p=1760"},"modified":"2026-09-20T19:43:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T19:43:36","slug":"working-with-categories","status":"publish","type":"resources","link":"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/resources\/working-with-categories\/","title":{"rendered":"DVI &#8211; Working With Categories"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Categories are simply a way to organize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/resources\/working-with-tasks\/\">tasks<\/a>. Very simple, you usually name categories after sections of the vehicle you&#8217;re working on. Something like Undercar, Underhood, Steering, Etc. Each category should contain multiple tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to remember is to keep this simple. When a mechanic looks at a checklist with 15 categories, each with 5-7 tasks, it looks much larger than a checklist with 5-7 categories, each containing 10-15 tasks. Odd, but you will hear them complain about how much longer it takes. In reality, it just looks different. So, keep it simple by grouping items accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To access your list of categories, go to the settings menu and select &#8220;Categories and Tasks.&#8221; If you don&#8217;t see this option, you may need to get the Shop Owner to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/resources\/setting-up-your-employees\/\">upgrade your security settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"548\" height=\"286\" src=\"\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-3.png\" alt=\"This image shows the menu layout to access the category and task editing\" class=\"wp-image-1758\" srcset=\"\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-3.png 548w, \/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-3-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a list of all of your categories and what you can do with them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"579\" src=\"\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-5-1024x579.png\" alt=\"This image explains the different parts of the category list and which columns contain what data\" class=\"wp-image-1765\" srcset=\"\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-5-1024x579.png 1024w, \/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-5-300x170.png 300w, \/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-5-768x434.png 768w, \/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-5.png 1122w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a new category. If you need another category, add it here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you add a category, it will appear in the list, and you can tap the 3 bars to sort them up or down. Keep in mind that all templates will use this order. Notice that the categories we use for the diagnostic flow sheets are at the bottom to show some separation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This column tells how many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/resources\/working-with-tasks\/\">tasks <\/a>are in this category<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This column shows how many of those tasks are being used. As you make changes to your templates, you may orphan some tasks, causing this to be smaller than the number in the first column<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may have disabled tasks. This and column #6 show the numbers of enabled\/disabled tasks in each category<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of disabled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repairshopsolutions.com\/about\/resources\/working-with-tasks\/\">tasks<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need to change a category name, do it here.
